
The
feast of San Fermin is one of Spain's most celebrated and well-known festivals locally as well as internationally. Perhaps it owes part of its fame to Ernest Hemingway who onced lived in the pueblo and also supported the event.
The one week celebration is held every first week of July. The firing of a firecracker in front of the ayuntamiento (town hall) marks its start. During the "chupinazo' or opening, people wear white shirts and pants plus a red bandana. What follows soon is a series of parties, celebrations, and of course the procession of the Patron Saint. One of the long awaited events is the "encierro" or running of the bulls every early morning. Here, people chase or let themselves be chased by bulls through the barricaded streets of Pamplona leading to the arena.
The festival was first held in 1591 and still continues to attract more people today.
